Current Canadian Trends
Canadian Council on Social Development:
-Between 1999 and 2004, approximately 4.5 million Canadians experienced poverty for at least one year.
-Women were more likely than men to live in poverty for extended periods of time. Between 1999 and 2004, 2.5% of women lived in poverty for all six years, compared to 1.8% of men.
Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development:
-Between October 2008 and October 2009, the unemployment rate rose from 6.3% to 8.6%
-The economic downturn especially affected immigrants of prime working age who entered Canada in the previous five years.
-Their employment declined by 13% - five times more than among the Canadian-born.
